Matty’s C2E2 Magical Cosplay Adventure

Dearest readers, you may not know me on this blog as a contributing writer, but hopefully you know me on the podcast as Vincent’s (underpaid) co-host and producer.  I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned on the podcast that I’m a comic book convention loving geek and nothing gets my blood pumping more than naked ladies and/or comic book conventions.  I could describe, at length, just what is so great about naked ladies, but Vincent has castrated this blog post to be JUST about my adventures at C2E2.  Specifically my Cosplay Adventures at C2E2.  Even more specifically, myMAGICAL Cosplay Adventures.

Behold the magic...
Behold the magic…

If you’re wondering what C2E2 is, I’ll assume you’ve suffered a head injury and maybe haven’t been paying attention to the midwest territory geek news because of all the rehab you’ve been working through.  For those of you with the head bandages: C2E2 is the official acronym for Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo.  This year’s C2E2 convention was the third annual in what I hope to be at least a century’s worth of geek related conventions.  These guys know how to do it right.

A little side tangent, but for about fifteen years I’ve been attending comic book shows in the greater Chicagoland area.  Wizard World had been the only show in town for quite a long time, and back in the day it used to actually be quite an awesome show.  I documented  a few of those previous adventures.   But, as the years went by I noticed that the Wizard World show was changing quite a bit.  Every year, fewer big names were making appearances, and after a while some major publishers stopped having booths there.   It turned into more of a vendor expo than anything, which for some is great, because you can’t deny the allure of fat ladies shouting “HALF PRICE TRADES!!” for three days straight.  But some of us crave more.  We want some sizzle.  We want stars.  We want screenings, and panels, and an experience you can’t get by simply ordering cheap books through an online discount comic book retailer.

ENTER C2E2.

The mighty banner leading into the convention.

The folks that put this show on know what they’re doing.  They’re the geniuses behind the New York ComicCon, which is a widely renowned and respected show, and they brought that same type of experience to the Windy City…which for we folk in the Midwest has turned out to be a Cromsend.  This show has everything I love about a great comicon.  There’s an enormous lineup of talent from all over comic books and entertainment, and most are accessible to buy their wares or gush about how much you love them.  There’s just something so satisfying about being able to hand a creator your money directly and walking away with (usually) a personalized piece of pop culture, which is exactly what Artist’s Alley is all about.  Publishers are actually there, and they have an EIC or Submissions Director doing portfolio reviews and taking submissions (you bet your ass I submitted…enjoy this year’s submission “No Sale”).  There is enormous archive of original comic book art for sale (not in my lifetime) or perusal.  There are panels, Q&A’s, demonstrations, live DJ’s, nerd speed dating, movie screenings, celebrities….I could go on and on.  But of course, they also have COSPLAY.

As you can deduce from my maturity level, or if you explored those ancient webpages I made about my comicon experiences, the cosplay element of these shows is one of my favorite things.  This first series of pics is just a tiny sampling of the overall cosplay experience.  I unfortunately missed out on the cosplay contest they had, but there was plenty to be seen on the show floor.  Enjoy part one of a three part series of pictures I took at this year’s C2E2.

Good lord...that Wonder Woman is wearing glasses! I've had so many dreams that start like this. They all end with her throwing her head back and laughing, like in this picture, too.

I'm gonna guess who these ladies are. Uh...Tentacle Mustache Blue-Faux, The Winged Citrus Fruit, Lady MagNippo, and And (Wo)Man?

You can't scratch your inner asscrack and wipe it on a random passerby without gettin' some poopflecks on one of these guys. I didn't bother taking many shots of the Star Wars cosplay, because that shit is EVERYWHERE. But, nicely done, none the less.

I honestly have no idea who she is supposed to be...but I'll assume she's maybe...something like...I dunno. The Mighty Queef? Maybe she's got queef related powers? Sorry, I really have no clue.

I really don't think these guys arrived together. The (pretty darn good) Wolverine smelled great and was a real charmer. The Gambit, on the other hand, could have used some tips on proper hygiene (or at the very least a bottle of cosplay Febreeze). Check out his wicked shower curtain rod bo-staff though. And extra points for his energized cards (which he explained to me how he made, in detail, for no less than thirty years).

Black Spiderman and Black Cat, both looking incredible. Black Cat had a body and costume neckline that demanded attention. So much so that even my wife needed to take a picture with her.

This is easily my favorite cosplay duo of the show. Sweet merciful Crom, could they be any cuter? Major points for both going as Ramona Flowers, but also for each being the cutest goddamn underage and of-age girls there, respectively. Did things just get weird?

These are pretty great. Rogue, Gambit, and White Queen. White Queen, coincidentally, was using her mind powers to cause "chubbening".

The Fabulous Glam-Trannies! I saw a great Nick Fury and (black!) Punisher excitedly walking toward them, but then slow up when one of them said "Wait...I think they have dicks..." Upon confirmation, they headed the other direction.

Always fun to see some Ghost Busters at the show. A friendly bunch, too.

This guy was a little more hard-assed than the rest of his crew. Maybe it's because of his enormous urinary catheter.

One of the more bizarre teamups of the show, Snow White and Xena, which subsequently resulted in one of the more bizarre wet dreams I've had.

Some of the upper tier cosplay goin' on at the show. Great work on these costumes. Nice to see the curvy ladies reprazentin' with some skintight confidence, too.

I know you guys are gonna hate me for this one, but when I asked this Slave Leia for a picture and she went to take the sweater off...I savored the moment when I creepily said "No...leave it on...". So, folks, here's Slave Leia with a Sweater.

This was one of the best Animated Series era Jokers that I saw at the show. Too bad this is the only shot I got of him, eh? At least I caught him mackin' on Lady Robin.

A pretty cool costume, but I'm not sure the white sneaks and stilts added very much to it. Luckily, she made up for it with bloody cleavage.

This Joker actually had a pretty awesome gimmick. If you took a picture of him, he'd hand you that joker playing card and say "Here's my card...", and on the back of it there was his email address to email the picture to. Awesome idea, but the joke's on him...I totally lost his card.

And so ends this installment of the Magical Cosplay Adventure.  Stay tuned for the next installment, where you’ll get to see me interacting with the cosplayers.  This usually means I’m pointing to my wiener or being punched!

Disclaimer: The crew at Robot’s Pajamas don’t know any of the people in the  pictures nor do they care to, so if they make fun of you and it upsets you, we’re really sorry.
